In late summer of 1994, Jack Noble, a former All-American quarterback, is in the middle of the toughest event he's ever taken part in. Marine Corps Recruit Training.

After eight weeks he's managed to make enemies of every drill instructor and every recruit in his platoon.

Then on one particularly humid South Carolina day, an odd sequence of events changes everything.

The Recruit A Jack Noble Short Story eBook LT Ryan

This really short (I thought it could have been expanded a little bit - that's why Only 4 Stars..) story tells how Jack Noble met Bear, a man Jack would trust his life with...and has!
They were both Marine recruits, so they did their basic training at Parris Island, near Beaufort, South Carolina.
Upon first meeting the two did not get along but all that changes one night...(I don't wanna give anything away, so that's all I'll say about the plot).
The story is wonderfully written by L.T. Ryan, as are ALL the Noble stories, novellas, episodes, what have you...
One last suggestion:
IF you're planning on reading the Novel: Noble Beginnings, You should read The Recruit first...
It's NOT a requirement, But it does give some further insight into Jack & Bear's friendship...
I'm reading the Novel right now and will post a review when finished, but if the beginning is any indication, the book should be another great story about Jack Noble.

The Recruit A Jack Noble Short Story eBook LT Ryan Reviews

A jarhead myself, I enjoyed reliving boot camp. I was disappointed with the editing. This is the first book I have read by the author. I feel this may have been his first. Not a bad effort. There is room for improvement and it appears the author has written many others. So I surmise this recruit has matured!
The description should say this is 17 pages. It’s not worth $3.99. In the book it says it should be free. I agree it should be free. This is a rip-off!!!
I am glad I read this before the first book in the Noble series. It gave the background so I knew what was going on.
I recommend to all readers. I think I actually like Bear better but he stays low key. Seems to be Robin instead of Batman.
I have read all of the Jack Noble books. Yet in the process of looking for the next book, I ended at "The Recruit." I don't remember reading it but knew after reading the first page, I knew I had. Instead of stopping and moving on. I found myself reading it for a second time. I'm an old lady and was surprised how fast I got hooked on the books by L.T. Ryan. This is truly a case of "Don't judge a book by it's cover." His saga about Jack Noble and "Bear" his unasked for partner, will take you around the world. You won't be able to put them down. I like the way the books are arranged in episodes. The first book had books 1 through 5, the second- 6 through 10. You no sooner finish one, and you are onto a different situation in the next section or "Book." You will be taken from a camp of Marine recruits to the White House as you read each successive book. If you are a reader of David Baldinacci and J.D. Robb you will enjoy L.T. Ryan.
Jack Noble, a lowly little recruit in boot camp, can't get anything right. Once again, he puts his platoon in the position of paying for his mistakes. They aren't happy about it. So when retribution time comes, they are all for another recruit, Bear, to kick Jack's butt. There is only one problem, Jack isn't planning to take it. It doesn't help that their little "boxing" bout isn't the last hand to hand action they have that night.

According to the description, this is a prequel to a novel. This story is just a little peek into how a partnership began. The writing is tight. Though it is only a peek I thoroughly enjoyed the view. I could easily picture the events that occurred and the bond created during that night seems to be a strong one. I'm looking forward to meeting these two again.

I highly recommend this little gem. Now I am off to get the big bauble.
I had already read Noble Beginnings, the first Jack Noble book, when I signed up for Goodreads and got The Recruit as a freebie. This short story is well-written and gives a very interesting look at how Jack got his start in the business. It is good reading, even if you have already read other books in the series.
Absolutely the most absurd depiction of Marine boot camp I have ever read.. The fact that a general would not court martial a sadistic DI would be unthinkable, besides it would have been handed by the company commander, usually a Captain.. That was only a start. I attended boot camp in 1951 and later, OCS in 1960 and spent 24 years in the Corp.
